“Healthier” Doughnuts

Oi! Oi! Everyone!

OK, I know what you gonna say… Healthy? Doughnuts? Are you kidding? Yes, it sounds weird to hear healthy with doughnuts but it is possible! I found a recipe with a lot less sugar and where the doughnuts are not fried but cooked in the oven. No! No grease! Amazing isn’t it? I tried the recipe yesterday and I love it! It’s not the first time I made it so I knew what they were gonna taste like but some of my friends like the greasiness of a fried doughnut and because of that, they didn’t like it when I cooked them in the oven. Thanks to this recipe you have 2 choices, you can cook them like I did in the oven or like real doughnuts fry them in a frying pan. Both are really good but if you want a healthier option, choose the oven! 🙂

For this recipe to make the doughnuts  you will need:
  • 350 g flour
  • 50 g caster sugar
  • 2 tsp baker’s yeast
  • 2 egg
  • 30 g butter/ 40-45 g if you fry them
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
For the topping and coating, you will need:
  • 1 glass of warm milk
  • Icing sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Food colouring if you want colours for your topping
  • Decorations
Now let’s get back to the yummy doughnuts!
Mix the baker’s yeast in 80 ml of warm milk.
Easy, now you need to mix everything together. If your dough is too sticky add more flour. You need to be able to form a ball with the dough.
After, you need to let the dough sit for about 45 minutes in a warm place. I personally use my oven, while I make the dough I preheat it at 60°C and turn it off. You need to put the dough in a bowl covered with plastic wrap.
45 minutes later… The wait is over!
Now, it’s time to shape the doughnuts! I personally use a shot glass and a big mug that I have! It works wonder! After that, you need to let them sit 10 more minutes in the oven.
Take them out.
Preheat oven to 180°C
Once warm, put the doughnuts for about 6-8 minutes. I found that 7 minutes was perfect. Don’t overcook them or they’ll be good as biscuits for tea or coffee! Never tried but might be good! 😉
The coating:
This is what you make to have yummy doughnuts!
6 tbsp of warm milk for 100 g of icing sugar.
The topping:
1 or 2 tbsp of warm milk for 100 g of icing sugar. It needs to have a creamy consistency.
Now that you’ve done it all, coat all your doughnuts and let them sit for 1 or 2 minutes. Then decorate the ones that you want with no toppings.
For the lucky ones with topping, put the topping on them and let decorate them.
Voila! You have your delicious doughnuts!
I hope you’ll like the recipe! Please share this recipe if you liked it! And share your photos with me!
